California Governor Urges Imperial County To Enact Stay-At-Home Order

Imperial County, which borders Mexico to the south and Arizona to the east, has never met the state's qualifications to reopen additional businesses like most other counties.

Gov. Gavin Newsom says he wants Imperial County in Southern California to reimpose a stay-at-home order amid a surge in positive coronavirus tests as he gives an update on the state's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, in Rancho Cordova, Calif., Friday, June 26, 2020.

Still, the coronavirus continues to spread rapidly in the area, with a per-capita infection rate almost seven times the state average. Newsom said there is also a need to decompress the county's hospital system, which other counties have helped do by accepting patients.

"If they are not able to come to some consensus, I am committed to intervening, as is my role and responsibility as governor of the State of California". San Francisco Mayor London Breed said she was "temporarily delaying" plans to reopen barber shops, tattoo parlors, outdoor bars and nail salons on Monday.

The county's positivity rate has averaged 23% in the last week, compared with 5.7 % percent statewide. "I can not impress upon people more to wear these masks when they can not practice physical distancing, to continue to be vigilant about the spread of this virus".
