The agency said the cases were recorded in Wangata health zone, Mbandaka, in Équateur province adding that four patients have died of the disease.

So far, more than 3 500 patients have been recruited in 35 countries.

"This is an important reminder that even as the WHO focuses on responding to the Covid-19 pandemic, we continue to monitor and respond to many other health emergencies", said Adhanom Ghebreyesus. An epidemic of the virus on the other side of the country has killed more than 2,200 people since 2018.

More than 150 trained Red Cross volunteers have been deployed as part of a first wave of response to the latest Ebola outbreak in the Équateur Province, in the western part of Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, WHO Regional Director for Africa, Matshidiso Moeti, noted that the new Ebola outbreak is happening at a challenging time when the country is also fighting the coronavirus pandemic. "Given the proximity of this new outbreak to busy transport routes and vulnerable neighbouring countries we must act quickly".

"This outbreak is in the same area as a previous outbreak in 2018, which was stopped in just three months", said WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
The team supported the collection and testing of samples, and reference to the national laboratory for confirmation. Work is ongoing to send additional supplies from North Kivu and from Kinshasa to support the government-led response.

Nearly 50 responders from the World Health Organization and its partners arrived in Mbandaka yesterday, along with 3 600 doses of Ebola vaccine and 2 000 cartridges for lab testing.

WHO continues to train millions of health workers all over the world to apply our guidance. He said that country is now at the final phase to battle against Ebola in their eastern DRC, COVID 19 as well as the world's largest outbreak of measles. On 14 May 2020, the Ministry of Health began the 42-day countdown to the declaration of the end of that outbreak.

"The announcement comes as a long, hard and complex Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo is in its final phase, while the country also battles COVID-19 and the world's largest measles outbreak", WHO said in a statement.
