Over 10 Million COVID-19 Cases Registered Worldwide

At least 10,003,942 infections, including 498,779 deaths, have been registered globally.

More than half a million people have lost their lives due to coronavirus, according to the figures by Johns Hopkins University on Monday.

The tallies, using data collected by AFP from national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO), probably reflect only a fraction of the actual number of infections.

More than 10 million global COVID-19 cases have been reported, according to the latest official figures, with the respiratory infection being particularly unsafe for the elderly.

The most recent numbers from Johns Hopkins show the death toll now stands at 501,206 since the first cases emerged in China late a year ago.

The pandemic has now entered a new phase, with India and Brazil battling outbreaks of over 10,000 cases a day, putting a major strain on resources.

Maharashtra so far has reported 1,47,741 cases, including 6,931 deaths. India saw a surge of about 3.5 lakh infections from June 1 till date.

The two countries accounted for over a third of all new cases in the past week.

In India, densely populated cities have been particularly hard hit.

In response to a surge in U.S. cases, California governor Gavin Newsom on Sunday ordered bars in seven counties - an area home to 13.5 million residents - to close. California had already ordered some areas to reinstate stay-at-home orders, and San Francisco announced a "pause" in its reopening.

Africa's confirmed COVID-19 cases continued to rise to a new high of more than 371,000, including 9,484 deaths.

The state has embarked on a testing blitz in Melbourne's hotspot suburbs. Health authorities warned they expect numbers to get worse in coming days and are considering further lockdowns.

Boris Johnson's government is set to ease virus lockdown restrictions by opening pubs, restaurants and hairdressers among others across England from July 4 - despite predictions of a second wave.
