USA to end 'controlled' defense exports to Hong Kong

Hong Kong

Arguing that the security law will diminish the city's autonomy, the Trump administration is moving to treat Hong Kong equally with mainland China for trading purposes. Beijing state media have yet to confirm the law was passed.

This act allowed Hong Kong to have its own export control system and made it a territory where the USA tariffs on Chinese goods did not apply.

"The government strongly condemns it and reiterates its support for the people of Hong Kong as they strive for democracy and freedom", said cabinet spokesman Evian Ting.

Mounting fear in Hong Kong centers on how the law will topple the firewall that separates the city of over 7 million with the mainland.

Hong Kong has been at the epicentre of pro-democracy protests since a year ago.

Authorities in Beijing and Hong Kong have repeatedly said the legislation is aimed at a few "troublemakers" in Hong Kong and will not affect rights and freedoms, nor investor interests.

This time, Beijing took no chances.

In passing the law in Beijing, China is making clear its legal system is paramount. The date is usually marked by a massive march in Hong Kong, but the city's police have banned the event this year, citing social distancing rules and the potential for violence.

"The move severely impacts Hong Kong society's freedom, human rights and stability".

Police arrested 53 people on Sunday at the scene of a rally against the national security legislation, which will see China's feared state security police stationed in the city to oversee the law's implementation. The city's Financial Secretary Paul Chan believes "any restrictions will damage the interests of American companies in Hong Kong".

Today's Weather: Showers And Storms
Tomorrow ( Monday ): Mostly sunny and warm again on Monday , but with a noticeable drop in humidity levels. The severe threat has lessened, but still there remains enough instability for a rogue strong storm.

The new law will mean that the U.S.

After months of sometimes-violent protests in Hong Kong against Beijing's encroachment last year, the new security law has heightened doubts about Hong Kong's future as a global financial hub and a regional base for worldwide companies that for years were drawn by the city's relative freedoms.

Beijing has also pushed ahead with the law despite sanctions from the United States and criticism from other western countries.

Beijing said on Monday it will impose visa restrictions on USA individuals with "egregious conduct" on Hong Kong-related issues, mirroring US sanctions against unnamed Chinese officials deemed responsible for curbing freedoms in the city. "In response to the above-mentioned wrong behaviour of the USA side, China has made a decision to impose visa restrictions on US personnel who perform badly on Hong Kong related issues".

Democracy activists in Hong Kong are still trying to determine if the law will be applied retroactively.

Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam listens to reporters' questions during a press conference in Hong Kong, Tuesday, June 23, 2020.

The fallout from the law is already being felt in Hong Kong.

Activist Joshua Wong and fellow activists Agnes Chow and Nathan Law announced their resignations from Demosisto, the youth political party they founded in 2016, on Facebook Tuesday. They resolved to continue their activism individually.

Pompeo said the U.S., effective Monday, was ending exports of defence equipment to Hong Kong and will also take steps to end the export of dual-use technologies to the territory.

"Great changes are coming.no one can be sure about their tomorrow, " Wong wrote on his Facebook page.
