Cineworld delays U.S. UK cinema reopenings to end of July

After originally announcing its plans to reopen in the middle of July, the Cineworld chain has now altered things slightly. AMC Theatres-owned Odeon has since confirmed to Variety that it will maintain plans of reopening from July 4.

The world's largest chain of cinemas, AMC, announced overnight that it, too, would delay reopening in the USA from 15 July until the end of month.

Shares in Cineworld, which had lost nearly three quarters of their value this year due to the coronavirus crisis, were trading up 2.8% by 0925 GMT.

The UK's largest chain of cinemas has pushed back its scheduled reopening date by three weeks, in response to further delays to the opening of key titles such as Mulan and Tenet.

Britain's Cineworld Group said on Tuesday it would delay reopening its cinemas in the United States and Britain until Friday 31 July, while following any changes to regulations or guidance from public health officials. "With the ongoing pandemic, this new date remains subject to final confirmation".

"With great films ahead, including Mulan, Tenet, A Quiet Place Part II, Wonder Woman 1984 and many more, we can't wait to be back".

Vue, which planned to reopen on July 10, has yet to decide on a new reopening date.

Exhibitors - many of whom have taken advantage of government-led furlough programs - also need to consider how and when to take staff off these programs. The knock-on though is there's little point cinemas opening their doors if they don't have much in the way of new movies to show.

But a number of important markets, such as Los Angeles and NY, have not yet given the go-ahead. As parts of the USA have begun to reopen, some states have seen massive spikes in infection rates.
