Starbucks Pauses Social Media Ads as It Targets'Hate Speech

On Monday, Ford became one of the latest companies to pause social media advertising when it announced a 30-day halt.

Calls for an advertising boycott of Facebook next month have come from the NAACP, the big civil rights group that defends African Americans' interests, and the Anti-Defamation League, which fights anti-Semitism. Organizers of an advertising boycott campaign say they're preparing to go global.

In a new letter to Mark Zuckerberg, three Democratic lawmakers pressed the Facebook chief executive for accountability on his company's role in amplifying white supremacy and allowing violent extremists, like those in "boogaloo" groups, to organize on its platform.

Any lasting impacts on Facebook Inc. and other big platforms will depend, of course, on how long advertisers withhold their spending.

Larry Chiagouris, a Pace University marketing professor, said most brand boycotts in recent years have fizzled out as initial enthusiasm fades.

"While Facebook has attempted to publicly align itself with this movement, its failure to address the hate spreading on its platform reveals significant gaps between Facebook's professed commitment to racial justice and the company's actions and business interests".

Both have signed up to stop buying ads on the world's largest social media platform for July.

"Our systems now remove 90% of and detect 90% of that hate speech automatically".

The subreddit forums r/The_Donald, which is popular with Mr. Trump's fans, and r/ChapoTrapHouse, which is a favorite of liberal Reddit users, are slated for removal alongside about 2,000 other communities, according to The Verge tech website.
