Fauci warns of "very disturbing" trends in U.S. coronavirus outbreak

During testimony before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee Tuesday, Fauci said it's hard to precisely predict how bad the spread of the virus will get, but said he believes it will be "very disturbing".

Health officials across the United States have expressed growing concern about the nation's ability and willingness to slow or end the coronavirus pandemic.

It comes as top USA disease expert Anthony Fauci, who is due to testify to Congress, says an "alarmingly large" number of Americans are "anti-science".

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the government's top infectious disease expert, said during a Senate hearing Tuesday that he was "very disturbed" by the recent spike in COVID-19 cases and said it's conceivable that the US could see as many as 100,000 new infections a day should trends continue.

Speaking with CNN over the weekend, Dr. Fauci-director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases-first spoke on the current problem with bafflingly bold community spread.

Florida, in particular, reported 9,585 cases on Saturday - a single-day record since the pandemic began.

Almost 10.3 million coronavirus cases have been detected worldwide, with roughly 2.6 million infections reported in the United States.

Fauci also expressed concerns that some people disregard federal health guidelines on masks and social distancing. "It's worked for us, but we clearly need to stay on our game".

US Sets Daily Record for New Cases of COVID-19
Jay Inslee introduced Saturday he is hitting the pause button on the state's reopening approach owing to climbing instances. In latest days, officers throughout the United States have described a increase in situations among the young groups.

"What we've seen in several states is several iterations of that".

"Unfortunately, this simple lifesaving practice has become part of the political debate that says this: If you're for Trump, you don't wear a mask. When you have community spread, it's insidious", he said.

"I think there was a lot of wishful thinking around the country that, "hey it's summer". The president has plenty of admires. Republican President Donald Trump has refused to cover his face in public.

Democrats including his November election rival Joe Biden have savaged the president for lack of leadership on pandemic mitigation.

Tuesday's hearing focused in part on whether the United States can adequately prepare for tens of millions of children returning to school in the coming months despite the resilient pandemic raging in some states.

America doesn't have the coronavirus under control.

Reminding us all once again that vaccines are only effective among a population that's willing to do the right thing, Dr. Fauci is warning that hopes for COVID-19 herd immunity are dashed if too many people remain opposed to basic science.

He also said he was "cautiously optimistic" that a vaccine could be ready by the end of the year or early 2021.
