Turns Off Automatic Back Up From Messaging Apps to Save Bandwidth Amid Coronavirus

Why Google is doing is, unsurprisingly, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic; due to quarantines and isolation, the search engine has seen a spike in the number of photos and video being sent and uploaded to its servers.

Google quietly made an important change to its Photos app that will affect those who usually back up images from various messaging apps. In essence, that means that by default, photos and videos from those services saved on your phone won't be backed up by Google Photos going forward.

As for which app is affected by Google Photos' change, the list includes the usual suspects: Facebook, Helo, Instagram, LINE, Messages, Facebook Messenger, Snapchat, Twitter, Viber, and WhatsApp.

The change goes further than just messaging apps, though.

For months we've all been stuck at home taking pictures of our cats, dinners and other noteworthy objects, and we've apparently been using a lot of bandwidth when backing them all up to Google Photos.

Although the backup feature is turned off now, you can turn it back on for any services used. Guidance on how to do that is offered in the Google Photos Help Center.

As an alternative, you can always create a local backup if you have a spare external hard drive lying around and invest in some backup software.
