Reiner wrote four volumes of memoirs, including "I Just Remembered" in 2014, as well as children's books.

Reiner based "The Dick Van Dyke Show", which made a star of Van Dyke and launched the career of Mary Tyler Moore, on his own experience as a television writer.

For many Americans, the Bronx-born Reiner was perhaps best known for the 1960s TV sitcom "The Dick Van Dyke Show", which he created and performed in as an irascible comedian.

His other children, Annie Reiner, went on to become an playwright and poet, while son Lucas Reiner is a painter and print maker. He also appeared as Alan Brady, the egotistical and overbearing boss to Van Dyke's character, stealing numerous scenes and episodes he appeared in. "He was my guiding light", Reiner's actor-filmmaker son Rob Reiner tweeted. He got his first TV break in Sid Caesar's variety show Your Show of Shows in 1950, where he appeared on air in skits while also got the opportunity of writing with Mel Brooks and Neil Simon. Joseph Stein adapted Reiner's autobiographical novel Enter Laughing into a play, and later turned it into the musical So Long, 174th Street. But CBS ultimately picked up the series in 1961, after it was recast and retitled for its new star, "The Dick Van Dyke Show".

He later directed George Burns in the title role of the 1977 comedy film "Oh God!" before collaborating with Steve Martin for a string of movies, including "The Jerk", "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" and "The Man with Two Brains". He recounted his childhood and creative journey in the 2013 book, I Remember Me. Reiner, the 98-year-old whose legendary career as a comedy writer, director and producer spanned over 60 years, died Monday of natural causes.

The Dick Van Dyke Show creator and TV legend Carl Reiner has died at 98. You can see the evidence of that splashed all throughout Reiner's prolific Twitter presence and public persona in general.

Reiner reprised the role of Brady on "Mad About You" and won an Emmy for his performance - one of nine he won in his career.

Bernadette Peters, who starred in Reiner's 1979 screwball comedy The Jerk with Martin, said, "Dearest Carl this was your last tweet always always caring til the end".

But Reiner never strayed far from television, continuing to make guest appearances on various shows such as "Two and a Half Men" and "Hot in Cleveland" well into his 90s, as well as keeping up a busy Twitter account.

In 2001 Reiner nabbed arguably his most popular acting role as one of the titular Ocean's Eleven in Steven Soderbergh's 2001 smash, portraying the elder con man Saul Bloom, a role intended for his old pal Alan Arkin. Associated Press contributed to the report.
