Reiner is survived by three children, including Rob Reiner, director of several hit movies and known for playing Archie Bunker's son-in-law "Meathead" in the hit TV comedy "All in the Family".

His son, Rob Reiner, also confirmed the sad news on Twitter, writing, "Last night my dad passed away".

"As I write this my heart is hurting. He was my guiding light".

It is with great sadness that ComingSoon.net (via Deadline) must report the passing of writer, director, actor and comedy legend Carl Reiner of natural causes at age 98. He also appeared as Alan Brady, the egotistical and overbearing boss to Van Dyke's character, stealing numerous scenes and episodes he appeared in.

Carl Reiner was born on March 20, 1922, in The Bronx, New York.

In 1950, Carl got his start in the entertainment industry by acting in Broadway musicals, most notably, landing the lead role in "Call Me Mister". He had guest appearances in several other TV shows over the years including Frasier, Mad About You, House, Seinfeld, King of the Hill, The Cleveland Show, Ally McBeal, The Bernie Mac Show, Two and a Half Men.

Victor of nine Emmy Awards, Reiner earned five for The Dick Van Dyke Show, which ran from 1961-66, and on which he played television host Alan Brady.

They will also receive repayment of a $50 million interim loan. According to CNN, the company is almost $1 billion in debt.

As a result of its success, Reiner moved into feature-film-making: his directorial debut was Enter Laughing in 1967, adapted from his own autobiography about a Jewish kid trying to break into showbusiness. He recounted his childhood and creative journey in the 2013 book, I Remember Me.

In 1943 he married cabaret singer Estelle Lebost, who would become renowned herself for her one-line role in her son's film When Harry Met Sally: "I'll have what she's having".

Subsequent directorial efforts - including the noir pastiche Fatal Instinct (1993) and the Bette Midler vehicle That Old Feeling (1997) - died swift deaths at the box office, suggesting Reiner had lost his comic touch.

One of the best-liked men in show business, the tall, bald Reiner was a welcome face on the small and silver screens. In more recent years, Reiner had a recurring role as Saul Bloom in Ocean's Eleven, Ocean's Twelve, and Ocean's Thirteen.

Clooney, who collaborated with Reiner on the "Ocean's Eleven" movies, told Variety, "Carl Reiner made every room he walked into funnier, smarter, kinder".

He was still taking voice roles in his 90s and had a key role in "If You're Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast", a documentary about people who keep busy into their 90s.
