Spike in Covid-19 cases in Australias Victoria stalls sports restart

But Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk warned that strict measures could be reinstated if other states experience break-out coronavirus clusters such as the current outbreak in Victoria, which recorded another 64 cases overnight.

Residents of those suburbs will be allowed to leave the house for four reasons: shopping for food and supplies, care and caregiving, exercise, and for study or work - but only if you can not do so from home.

"Victoria Police will be actively - actively - enforcing these suburban lockdown, this stay-at-home order", Andrews said.

Pubs, restaurants and cafes will be allowed to open to takeaway and delivery only.

All affected businesses will be given a A$5000 ($5354) grant or a payroll tax refund.

Mr Andrews said nearly 17,500 tests were performed in the hot spot areas on Monday, bringing the total number of tests in the past three days to more than 93,000.

South Australia premier Steven Marshall has thrown another spanner in the works for the AFL after announcing teams coming into the state from Victoria would be required to isolate for 14 days.

Thirteen of the new cases have been linked to known outbreaks and 20 have been identified through routine testing, while 31 cases remain under investigation.
