India bans TikTok Xiaomi apps amidst rising tensions with China

Indian lawmakers and officials have always been calling for a ban anyway, out of concerns over data collection, exposure of children to sexually explicit material, numerous reports of deaths and injuries, and general anxiety that youths are frittering their lives away on the app.

A TikTok India representative has reportedly said that the company has arranged a meeting with the Indian government to "respond and submit clarifications". The Hindustan Times reports that Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said China is "strongly concerned" about the embargo, which also applies to WeChat, Helo, Shareit, and Alibaba's UC Browser.

On Monday evening, the Narendra Modi government issued a surprise order that blocked number of apps with Chinese links, in a move that it described as necessary to protect the security and privacy interests of millions of Indian Internet users.

Several Indian lawyers said chances of a success through a legal challenge this time were slim given the government had invoked national security concerns, meaning the Chinese companies can only hope to lobby India to reverse the decision.

In a statement, TikTok said that it complies with all Indian laws and does not share user information with any foreign government.

An Indian ban on dozens of Chinese apps following a border clash between the two nations has possibly derailed a $1 billion India expansion plan of China's ByteDance, while also sparking an uproar from users of its popular TikTok video app.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has used the country's 500 million internet users - second only to China - as a lure in getting tech giants including Twitter to localize Indians' data.

All public health measures remain in place, however, including physical distancing between people of different households. Alberta's death toll from COVID-19 sits at 154, with no new deaths reported in the province since Thursday.

Opening up on how it could be a temporary thing, she added, "As far as I know, there was a temporary ban in TikTok earlier. Maybe it's a temporary move", said Mr Khan.

He said that data security is a major concern and that more such measures will impact China's economy.

Tencent invests in food delivery app Swiggy, e-commerce platform Flipkart, ride-sharing firm Ola and learning app Byju's. "But the big Chinese investors will find a way to indirectly invest in a growing market like India", said Mr Deepak Abbot, a fintech entrepreneur and former senior vice-president of Paytm.

Some Indian apps like ShareChat, a local language social media platform, welcomed the ban. TikTok's sixth-most-popular creator, India's Riyaz Afreen, has over twice as many followers as Hype House attraction Chase Hudson, and about as many as TikTok's company account.

Similarly, an app called Bolo Indya, which lets users create short videos saw over 100,000 new downloads in the last 12 hours.

Industrialist Anand Mahindra "who never used TikTok" has downloaded Chingari and tweeted about it, saying "More power to you". Currently, founders of MobiKwik and employees command a 52% stake in the company, and count the likes of Bajaj Finance, Sequoia Capital, American Express and Net1 as other investors.
