Albon happy with F1 auto balance despite FP2 British GP crash

Verstappen satisfied with half a second deficit on Mercedes at Silverstone

Racing Point have modelled their machines on last season's championship-winning Mercedes, and in the absence of team leader Sergio Perez following his positive coronavirus test, Stroll took on the baton for the Silverstone-based team.

The two Mercedes men were separated by Ferrari's Charles Leclerc in an unexpectedly mixed-up practice order that gave Hamilton some pleasure.

Hamilton started the weekend as the favourite to win on Sunday, but on the basis of Friday's evidence, the Briton will not have it all his own way as he chases a third win in four races this term.

Ferrari had Charles Leclerc fifth and fourth but the Monegasque's team mate Sebastian Vettel was sidelined for the opening session after Ferrari detected something wrong with his car's intercooler system and made a decision to strip it down.

"It's windy, as it always is here, but that's a good thing and with the wind coming from different directions it was really tricky".

"I think it's more an understanding of the team's side of things, understanding the vehicle a bit better, and just adjusting the driving style and adapting to the auto a bit better. We will figure it out so it is not a disaster, but it has been a hard day". The heavy impact triggered the FIA sensor that saw the medical vehicle deployed but Albon was able to walk way from the crash, admitting he was caught by surprise how the auto snapped away.

Lopez tests positive for COVID-19, withdraws from Drive On
A caddie, who wasn't named, also tested positive in pre-travel testing last week and did not make the trip, the tour reported. That means she will miss the Drive On Championship, set to start Friday at Inverness Club in Toledo.

Perez had flown home to Mexico by private jet to visit his mother in hospital following the Hungarian Grand Prix and had shown no symptoms.

The German acquitted himself well, setting the ninth best time despite reporting some discomfort from the seat - and having to wear his team-mate Lance Stroll's spare overalls.

On a very hot day in central England, the air temperature was 35 degrees Celsius and the track 48 as the second session delivered dramatic and unexpected action in front of empty grandstands and campsites. "The rear went quite quickly and I struggled to correct it".

"Yeah I think we've definitely made a step as a team", Albon added. "We expected worse coming into today but the vehicle feels good and it was hooked up straight away from the first lap in FP1".

"I got blocked on my fast lap and then moved on to race runs, so I don't have a proper time on the board for FP2 but in the end that doesn't matter on a Friday and it wasn't a bad day for us", Verstappen commented.

Elsewhere, British driver Lando Norris finished 11th, five spots behind Carlos Sainz in the sister McLaren.
