Coronavirus cases surge to 50 ahead of long weekend

The province also recorded one new death, in the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, bringing the total in B.C.to 195.

There are now 3,168 people who have recovered from COVID-19 in B.C. Of the total COVID-19 cases, five people are in hospital (no change from July 30), two of whom are in intensive care.

Fraser Health says Dania Home is a long-term care facility owned and operated by Dania Home Society.

The outbreak is the first at a Fraser Health facility since June 17.

The number of people testing positive for the coronavirus in BC continues to rise.

The outbreak is at Dania Home, a long-term care home with independent and assisted-living facilities in Burnaby. Of the 50 new cases, five cases are epidemiologically-linked, meaning people who were never tested but were presumed to have COVID-19 because they developed symptoms and were close contacts of a laboratory-confirmed case.

The ministry says most of the new cases are connected to an ongoing outbreak at a berry packing plant in the Fraser Valley.

The latter outbreak prompted the provincial government to announce Thursday that it would restrict non-resident travel to the archipelago.

As the province heads into the B.C. Day long weekend, health officials are reminding British Columbians to "play safe and stay safe" while the virus continues to be found within communities. "We can make this B.C. Day holiday weekend one where we find the right balance: having those important social connections with our friends and family, while taking precautions to protect ourselves and those around us".

Northern Health has two new cases and a new total of 88.
