Prakasam district Superintendent of Police Siddharth Kaushal told the Hindustan Times that they consumed hand sanitiser due to non-availability of liquor amid the coronavirus pandemic. He was rushed to the Darsi Government Hospital where he told police, who were investigating the death of a beggar from the previous night, that he and others were consuming sanitiser since several days.

The deaths in the town of Kurichedu, in Andhra Pradesh, came as India reported another record surge in daily COVID-19 cases, taking the total to 1.64 million.

He added that they had sent samples of the sanitiser away for chemical analysis.

While three persons died late on Thursday night, six others died on Friday morning and yet another person died while undergoing treatment, said Kurichedu Mandal Revenue Officer U. Ashok Vardhan after conducting a preliminary inquiry.

They were alcohol-dependent, he added, and had started drinking the mixture about 10 days before they died.

The incident took place in Kurichedu town, and the police said that the deceased had been drinking sanitiser, either mixed with alcohol or water, for at least the past week.
