"China has never interfered in the internal affairs of other countries, including the United Kingdom, and we ask the same from other countries", Liu said.

Lam said she invoked the Emergency Regulations Ordinance to hold off the vote, adding the move is backed by Beijing. "The EAC understands and respects the government's decision, and will coordinate on the practical arrangements for postponement", said a spokesman for the EAC.

Hong Kong has suspended its assembly election by a year amid a rise in coronavirus cases. "In terms of how we should deal with the one year postponement and vacuum of the legislative body, the Central People's Government will submit the matter to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress for a decision". The committee announced on Thursday that it would next convene August 8-11 rather toward the end of the month as usual.

Wong was one of those disqualified, along with other young firebrand activists and some older, more moderate democracy campaigners.

"Beyond any doubt (this) is the most scandalous election fraud era in Hong Kong history", Wong, one of the city's most recognisable democracy figures, told reporters on Friday before the elections were postponed.

Civic Party chair Alan Leong warned on Thursday that the party's two remaining election hopefuls - Jeremy Tam and Gordon Lam - would likely be banned from the polls, as would any backup candidates. Earlier this month, they held an unofficial primary, with candidates including Wong topping the polls.

The new law is seen as Beijing's attempt to curb dissent in the city, after months of pro-democracy and anti-government protests in Hong Kong previous year.
