Nick Kyrgios won’t play U.S. Open due to coronavirus concerns

Murray expects other stars to skip US Open after Barty withdrawal

Australia's Nick Kyrgios has ruled out playing in this year's US Open, saying he is making his decision for "my Aussies", and for the people who have lost their lives in the COVID-19 pandemic.

Three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray wasn't surprised when world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty announced she wouldn't be taking part in this year's US Open as the Briton expects more withdrawals from the event will follow.

Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams have all entered the August 20-28 Western & Southern Open in NY, which was relocated from Cincinnati this year because of the coronavirus pandemic and will serve as a tune-up for the U.S. Open.

"It hurts me at my core not to be out there, competing in one of the sport's greatest arenas, Arthur Ashe Stadium".

Djokovic, Grigor Dimitrov, Borna Coric and Viktor Troicki all tested positive for COVID-19 after the Adria Tour and Kyrgios has since waged a running battle with some of those who played, including Alexander Zverev and Dominic Thiem, blasting their "stupidity" and risky behaviour.

"Tennis players, you have to act in the interest of each other and work together", Kyrgios added.

Instead, Fox chose X-Men fans' top choice for the role, Patrick Stewart, who went on to play Xavier for the next 17 years. According to the Hollywood Reporter , Jackson was never a serious contender for the Professor X role.

"Dear tennis, let's take a breath here and remember what's important, which is health and safety as a community", he said in the video.

"I have heard some of the top male players aren't going to play".

Kyrgios had no problems with the USTA scheduling the tournament or players competing if they chose, "so long as everyone acts appropriately and acts safely".

"You can't be dancing on tables, money-grabbing your way around Europe or trying to make a quick buck hosting an exhibition - that's just so selfish.

If they don't feel safe, and don't feel comfortable, travelling and going there and putting themselves and their team at an increased risk, then it's completely understandable", he said.

Barty, who claimed her maiden Grand Slam title at the French Open past year, doesn't feel the United States are a safe place for tennis right now.
