The series introduced Velma, Daphne, Shaggy, Fred and the beloved Scooby-Doo to kids and cartoon enthusiasts across the United States, and all over the world.

"He never stopped writing and creating, even as he aged". It was launched as a gentler series partly in response to complaints about violence in cartoons such as Space Ghost.

The gang started solving mysteries when "Scooby-Doo" first aired on CBS way back in 1969, with Joe and Ken writing the animated series' first 5 episodes, plus story editing and supervising for the rest of the inaugural series.

The success of Scooby-Doo ensured numerous follow-up and spin-off animated series, including films starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. "He was half of Ruby-Spears, who created THUNDARR THE BARBARIAN, GOLDIE GOLD, and a slew of others, but he was also the co-creator of SCOOBY DOO!".

Speaking to Scooby-Doo fansite Scooby Addicts, Ruby said: "I did some magazine cartooning years before, but never pursued [working as a writer] much". "We imagined they were just going to be a super delicious doggy snack". "We were anxious it wouldn't last but one season".

Ruby began his career in animation at the Walt Disney Animation Studios where he worked in the inbetweeners department.

After Scooby-Doo became a hit, Ruby and Spears were hired by CBS president of children's programming Fred Silverman to oversee the Saturday morning cartoons.

Later, Ruby went to Hanna-Barbera Productions where he met Ken Spears.

Hanna-Barbera's parent company Taft Entertainment acquired Ruby-Spears in 1981, and its catalogue went to Turner Broadcasting in 1991. Ruby went on to produce Punky Brewster, Lazer Tag Academy, Centurions, Rambo, Sectaurs and Chuck Norris: Karate Kommandos throughout the '80s.

Joe Ruby is survived by his wife, Carole, of 63 years, as well as four children and ten grandchildren.
