"I haven't had one complaint", Trump said, congratulating federal and local officials at a news conference at a fire station.

"I'm here to support the great people of Louisiana".

Trump arrived at Lake Charles, Louisiana, a city of some 80,000 residents that was hard-hit by Laura.

One day before his trip to survey the damage, Trump issued a disaster declaration for Louisiana, a move that makes federal money available to the five parishes that were in Laura's direct path.

President Donald Trump talks with Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards, in white short, as he tours damage from Hurricane Laura, Aug. 29, in Lake Charles, La. This is the first hurricane I've experienced. Among the officials on hand were Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and U.S. Sen.

Trump later flew by helicopter to the nearby city of Orange, Texas, meeting with state officials to discuss their response to Laura. He was flying back to Washington Saturday evening.

"Our hearts go out to families who lost loved ones", he said on Saturday, according to Lafayette newspaper The Daily Advertiser.

Banksy-funded rescue boat with more than 200 migrants calls for help
The Sea-Watch 4, which has a clinic on board and is itself in search of a host port, sailed for nearly 12 hours to help the Louise Michel .

Trump has sometimes struggled with his function as consoler in main, failing to job empathy when seeing areas hard struck by catastrophe and tragedy. That includes in Puerto Rico, where Trump was photographed tossing rolls of paper towel into the crowd, which some saw as inappropriately playful, given the circumstances.

During a visit to the Carolinas in 2018, Trump marveled in yacht floodwaters had sprayed on a family's house, telling them, "You have a wonderful ship from this offer". And he was caught on camera telling a person he'd handed out food to "have a good time".

This isn't the first time Trump's come under fire for bragging about the value of his autograph.

The massive storm hit Louisiana early on Thursday with 150 mile-per-hour (240 kph) winds, damaging buildings, knocking down trees and cutting power to more than 650,000 people in Louisiana and Texas.

More than 580,000 coastal residents has been put under evacuation orders as the hurricane gained strength in the Gulf of Mexico.

Several of the deaths have been attributed to carbon monoxide poisoning and the CDC has warned people about the risk of using "alternate power sources such as gasoline generators and may use propane or charcoal grills for cooking". It hit the USA after killing almost two dozen people in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
