GENEVA, Switzerland - The Emergency Committee on COVID-19, convened by the World Health Organisation (WHO) director-general under the International Health Regulations (2005) (IHR) held its fourth meeting on July 31.

"We have said it before and we'll say it again: young people are not invincible", he told journalists.

"That's why young people must take the same precautions to protect themselves and protect others as everyone else".

More than 16.8 million confirmed COVID-19 cases, including some 662,000 deaths, have been reported to the World Health Organization globally as of Thursday afternoon, according to its latest dashboard on the disease.

In its statement following the meeting, published today, it expressed "appreciation for World Health Organization and partners" COVID-19 pandemic response efforts, and highlighted the anticipated lengthy duration of this COVID-19 pandemic, noting the importance of sustained community, national, regional, and global response efforts'.

The brief also suggests ways to transform long-term care services so that older people can receive quality care that respects their rights, freedoms and dignity, Tedros added.

"The pandemic is a once-in-a-century health crisis, the effects of which will be felt for decades to come", Tedros informed a conference of the WHO's emergency situation committee, according to remarks launched by the company. Pharma giants Sanofi and GSK said on July 29, 2020, that they have agreed to supply Britain with up to 60 million doses of a potential COVID-19 vaccine.

"Our starting point...is that health involves behaviour".

He commended Saudi Arabia for implementing measures to make this year's Hajj pilgrimage as safe as possible.

Speaking about the rise in cases, Dr. Ronan Glynn, Acting Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, said; "Today's figures demonstrate how quickly COVID-19 can remerge in our country".

"It's not easy, but it can be done".

Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO's technical lead on the pandemic, said that night clubs in a number of places had become "amplifiers of transmission" of the virus.
