3 magnitude quake jolts southern Philippines

The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed Saturday that were actually two earthquakes last Thursday near the Florida/Alabama state line.

In the meantime, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre says it registered a 6.5-magnitude natural disaster 54 kilometres southeast of Digos in the Philippines at a depth of 122 kilometres.

There had been no immediate reports of injuries, the Chilean emergency authorities said.

The Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean navy said the characteristics of the quake did pose a tsunami threat for the coast.

A magnitude 6.8 quake struck in the Pacific off the coast of northern Chile early Tuesday.

There was no damage reported from either natural disaster.

The Philippines is located in the so-called "Belt" or "Pacific Ring of Fire", which concentrates areas of intense seismic and volcanic activity.
