Friday Update: 10 New Cases; Five Hospitalized At BMH

The 179 COVID-19 cases reported Friday are a reflection of how British Columbians spent Labour Day, according to the province.

"The ongoing increase in the national daily case counts is an indicator of accelerated epidemic growth", Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada's chief public health officer, said during a news conference Friday.

This brings the B.C. total to 7,842 cases and total deaths to 223.

There have been two new health-care facility outbreaks.

Out of the 282 Whitley County cases, 29 patients were under the age of 18, 18 patients were ages 18-20, 58 patients were ages 21-30, 49 patients were ages 31-40, 38 patients were ages 41-50, 33 patients were ages 51-60, 25 patients were ages 61-70, 21 patients were age 71-80, and 11 patients were over age 80.

Whitley County has reported a total of two COVID-19 deaths with the first happening on July 21, and the second happening on August 20.

Outbreaks remain active at 10 long-term care or assisted-living facilities and five acute-care units.

Those health problems range from lung disease and serious heart conditions to severe obesity and diabetes.

"We need to push the COVID-19 curve back down and we have the knowledge, the tools and resources to do just that". The illness usually causes mild or moderate sickness and many cases lack symptoms.

The nine cases were a man and woman in their 60s, a woman in her 50s, a woman in her 40s, a man and woman in their 30s and two women and a man in their 20s, according to Thurston County Public Health and Social Services.

Elsewhere in the province, the Interior Health region has reported 492 cases while the Northern Health region has confirmed 244.
