Two papers on GW190521 were published September 2, the first one being in Physical Review Letters and the other in Astrophysical Journal Letters.

In the five years since the project discovered gravitational waves, scientists across the world have fine-tuned instruments measuring these gravitational waves to find new phenomenon in space.

In the latest discovery, LIGO and Virgo detected only 4 waves from the spiraling black holes whose frequencies reached 30 to 80 Hz in a tenth of a second. The mass of a massive black hole produced by the collision of two black holes is the same as a black hole born with the death of a star.

"This is a milestone in modern astronomy and a personal milestone after six years of intensive research of hunting these elusive black holes", Jani said. Recently, the team detected gravitational wave GW190521, which began its journey toward Earth 7 billion years ago when two mid-sized black holes collided.

Astronomers have detected a gravitational wave from a black hole so massive that existing theories suggest it shouldn't exist. Since 2015, both of these observatories have been sensing gravitational waves.

Due in part to its brief signal, astronomers had to ensure it wasn't noise that was causing the suspected detection. "What we know for sure is that creating this medium mass black hole is a much more rare process".

Up to this point, astronomers had observed black holes - super-dense regions of space with gravity so strong light can not escape them - in only two general sizes. But they're not all created equally.

According to the study, those black holes were about 85 and 65 times the sun's mass. They're formed when a massive star collapses at the end of its life cycle aka a star dies. The intermediate mass black hole is heavier than a black hole formed by the collapse of a star, but not as heavy as a supermassive black hole, meaning there is likely a different way black holes can form aside from stars colliding. This is a personal milestone after an in-depth search for black hole hunting.

Black holes stubborn with each other like goats are striking with their huge size. One category ranges between a few solar masses (one solar mass is the mass of our Sun) and tens of solar masses. Astronomers believe they are needed as building blocks for the supermassive black holes, and there is indirect evidence for their existence, but this may be the most convincing sighting yet, albeit right at the bottom of the range. These range from hundreds of thousands, to billions of times that of our sun.

"There's been no observational evidence prior to this discovery", Goetz said.

Whatever the conditions that formed the black hole, it has already broken a host of records. They utilized the two LIGO sensors in America and the third in Italy to realize such an observation. The second is that multiple black holes could have merged within a dense star cluster, creating larger black holes of differing masses. "The idea I really like is a hierarchical merger where we have a black hole formed from the previous merger of two smaller black holes". She was not involved with the research. We've detected stellar-mass black holes, up to 100 times the mass of the Sun; and we've detected supermassive black holes, typically between a million and a billion times more massive than stellar-mass black holes.

Because of the mass, the GW190521 signal was nearly entirely dominated by merger ringdown, which allowed us to measure the ringdown frequencies with a high precision.

Until May 2019, black hole mergers detected by LIGO and Virgo largely supported that mass cutoff. "And then it becomes massive, and it grows to about 50 times and then it sinks to the centre".

But the detection of GW190521 seems to have left more questions than answers. "And that potentially makes it extremely exciting". They created a new, intermediate black hole about 142 times the mass of our sun.

The final 142-solar-mass black hole produced by the newly-discovered merger lies within this intermediate mass range between stellar-mass and supermassive black holes. "We are beginning to populate the black hole mass gaps previously thought to exist, with "impossible" black holes that have been revealed through our detections". Sean Farrell, Senior Author at the University of Leicester Said in 2009.
