Other companies that have deals to supply vaccines to the government include GlaxoSmithKline plc (NYSE: GSK) and Sanofi SA (NASDAQ: SNY).

Morrison, who has previously expressed optimism that a vaccine could be available early 2021, in August said that a vaccine would be made "as mandatory as you can possibly make it" but later walked back from that suggestion.

It will take possession of the first 3.8 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine in January and February 2021, and then receive a further 30 million doses, Morrison will say in extracts from an announcement sent to Reuters.

Australia's second-most-populous state has been the epicentre of a second wave, now accounting for about 75% of the country's 26,320 cases and 90% of its 762 deaths.

The Prime Minister also remains committed to ensuring early access to the vaccines for countries in the Pacific as well as regional partners in Southeast Asia.

Minister for Industry, Science and Technology Karen Andrews said these agreements demonstrate what can be achieved when researchers and industry work together.

The Australian government will offer funds to support CSL's ability to manufacture AZD1222, the company added.

He said CSL had been working at pace to respond to the pandemic and had invested significant resources in the rapid development and large-scale manufacture of the UQ vaccine, dubbed S-clamp. The UQ and CSL candidate is scheduled to begin phase two trials in late 2020 and if all trials are successful it could be rolled out to Australians in mid-2021. To date it has generated strong immune responses, with no significant safety concerns.

Esther Orozco, co-ordinator of the scientific group that represents Mexico at the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, said research based on a virus that transmits the avian Newcastle disease is the most viable candidate to produce the first vaccine in Mexico.

UQ has recently announced that pre-clinical testing showed the vaccine is promising and already effective in animal models.

Australia's largest pharmaceutical company, said it had signed initial deals for the supply of vaccines against the novel coronavirus if they successfully complete clinical trials.
