Australians missing after livestock ship hit by Typhoon Maysak near Japan

Desperate search for crew of ship sunk in typhoon off Japan

Campaign manager Marianne Macdonald said: "These cows should never have been at sea. We pray that there are other survivors", it said.

The survivor, Jay-nel Rosals, a Filipino deckhand, was wearing a life jacket and floating in a raft north of Amami Oshima island in the East China Sea, where rescuers have been searching for the Gulf Livestock 1 ship and its missing crew since it sent a distress signal.

The ship-tracking website MarineTraffic.com said it was sailing into high winds when it vanished 100 miles west of the Japanese island of Amami Oshima.

Typhoon Maysak was blowing by southern Japan when the ship sank. So far, he is one of two survivors from the vessel's crew of 43.

A photo dated September 4 provided by Japan's 10th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters shows an unmanned life boat drifting near Kodakarajima island. He told them the ship stalled when an engine stopped, then capsized after being hit broadside by a powerful wave and sank.

"When it was capsizing, an onboard announcement instructed us to wear a life jacket", Edvardo said, according to the NYT. He did not see any other crew members before he was rescued.

On Friday afternoon, the Coast Guard rescued another Filipino sailor.

He was conscious and able to walk by himself, they said.

William Mainprize, from New South Wales, has been identified as the second missing Australian who was on board the cattle ship, Nine News reported.

The rescued man was named as 45-year-old Eduardo Sareno, the ship's chief officer.

The Japanese coastguard said on Friday it had not set a deadline to end the search for survivors from the ship, which left Napier port in New Zealand on August 14 and had been due to arrive 17 days later at the Port of Jingtang in Tangshan, China.

Garcia had provided the biggest upset of the tournament on Wednesday when she eliminated top seed Karolina Pliskova. Serena Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam victor , defeated Kristie Ahn 7-5 6-3 in her first-round match on Tuesday.

Along with Edvarodo, there were 38 other Filipino crew members, two Australians and two New Zealanders.

The young cows were exported by Australia-headquartered Australasian Global Exports, which specialises in live animal exports and owns quarantine facilities in China.

There are three coast guard vessels, five planes and specially trained divers involved in the search-and-rescue mission.

Japan's Coast Guard and the Maritime Self Defence Force launched a significant search effort but strong winds and torrential rain from Typhoon Maysak made it challenging.

On Friday night, with the typhoon closing in, authorities suspended the search.

Japan is now in its annual typhoon season, and a second enormous storm is on course to arrive in the same area around Sunday, according to local forecasters, which could limit the search.

Mr Orda, 25, is originally from Mt Isa but lived on the Gold Coast.

A 30-year-old Philippine national was the second crewman off the capsized cattle ship "Gulf Livestock 1" that departed from Napier. He and his wife Emma welcomed their first child, Theo, six months ago.

The ship was on route to the Port of Jingtang in Tangshan, China, with an estimated journey of approximately 17 days.

The two found alive are among the 39 crew listed as being from the Philippines.

"Officials from MPI are working closely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the exporter".
