Barnier, Frost meet as UK Brexit bill raises hackles

Brexit: Biden tells UK there will be no US trade agreement unless Northern Irish peace deal is respected

The interjection comes 24 hours after a call from Democratic candidate for the Presidency Joe Biden that there would be no UK-US trade deal should the Northern Ireland peace process "become a casualty of Brexit".

Critics of the bill had balked at the fact that it makes it possible for the government to override parts of the Brexit divorce deal that the United Kingdom and the European Union agreed past year.

Boris Johnson's concession on legislation allowing him to override the Brexit withdrawal agreement has been dismissed as insufficient by Brussels and leading Tory critics of the plans.

Four congressmen have dispatched a strongly-worded letter to the prime minister urging him to scrap his controversial plan to take powers to overturn the Northern Ireland protocol created to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland.

"We're very hopeful our friends and partners will see the logic of reaching an agreement", Johnson said to a panel of lawmakers in Parliament.

Raab's statement, as well as another delivered on the U.S. cable news network CNN, came in direct response to a tweet by Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden - an Irish-American Catholic.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson faces a battle in the House of Lords over his controversial plan to break global law over Brexit despite making concessions to buy off rebels in the House of Commons.

Johnson has described his legislation as a "safety net" to protect the integrity of the U.K. It was necessary, he said, to prevent "extreme or irrational interpretation" of the protocol dealing with Northern Ireland that could lead to a border in the Irish Sea separating Northern Ireland from the rest of the U.K.

The danger is that the deteriorating atmosphere between the two sides jeopardizes ongoing trade negotiations, and the threat of a disruptive no-trade-deal Brexit - meaning tariffs and quotas on commerce, plus an economic shock - is looming.

The French state-owned news network France 24 reported that Johnson said a free-trade deal is what "this country wants" and "what our friends and partners of the European Union expect of us".

The proposed law, which overrides parts of the Brexit treaty relating to trade in Northern Ireland, has threatened to torpedo already deadlocked trade talks.

The EU's Michel Barnier and United Kingdom counterpart David Frost held two hours of talks at European Union headquarters with fears rising of a damaging cliff-edge "no deal" at the end of this year. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) has warned Britain that if it violated the withdrawal agreement and undermined the Good Friday accord, "there will be absolutely no chance of a USA -U.K. trade agreement passing the Congress". She mentioned that Britain would not be able to clinch the trade deal with the United States if it undermined the treaty that brought peace to Northern Ireland after years of violence.

"I am confident they'll get it right", Mr Pompeo said at a joint press conference with UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab in Washington.

Pelosi released a statement after the visit.

And Johnson's promise also failed to impress the EU.

The government also said it would amend its Internal Market Bill to set "clear limits" on the "scope and timeliness of judicial review into these powers", attempting to insulate itself from the kinds of protracted legal battles that have been a feature of the Brexit saga.
