Romanian police find 200 'irreplaceable' books by Galilei Newton and others stolen from London warehouse in 2017

"The books, which included original editions of Galileo Galilei and Isaac Newton, were stolen by a highly sophisticated global organised crime group, known to the authorities for committing a large number of burglaries throughout Europe".

Rare books were stolen from a warehouse Heathrow back in 2017.

Detective Inspector Andy Durham, from the Met Police's Specialist Crime South, said: "This recovery is a flawless end to this operation and is a demonstration of successful joint working between the Met and our European law enforcement partners in Romania and Italy - and at Europol and Eurojust".

In January 2017, the books were stolen while being stored in a warehouse in West London where they were being prepared for shipment to Las Vegas for a book auction.

Despite UK police making 13 arrests the ancient books have remained hidden until this week.

Following the execution of a European investigation order, Romanian Police officers and prosecutors from the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) conducted a house search in Neamt county on September 16.

London police said the suspects were part of a Romanian organized crime group that is responsible for several warehouse burglaries in the United Kingdom.

Based out of the Iași region in eastern Romania, the group is said to have a history of involvement in high-scale robberies.

It estimated that the group had employed the same system to execute 11 other burglaries in London, stealing #2 million ($2.18m) value of the land.

The global investigation led to 45 addressed across the UK, Romania and Italy being searching in June a year ago, and resulted in arrests.

Some 12 of those have pleaded guilty and will be sentenced later this month, while the 13th defendant will be tried in March, the force added.

"The books found are extremely valuable [rahallisesti], but more importantly, they are invaluable and of great importance to the world's cultural heritage, "said the forensic scientist".
