Iranian TV: British-Iranian Dual National Faces New Charge

British-Iranian aid worker Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was summoned by an Iranian Revolutionary Court on Tuesday and informed about a new charge, state television reported.

Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who was arrested in April 2016, is serving a five-year sentence for sedition. She was arrested in 2016 as she was leaving Iran after taking her then 22-month-old daughter to visit family.

Zaghari-Ratcliffe and tens of thousands of other detainees were released temporarily in March over concerns the coronavirus could spread through Iran's crowded prisons.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson was criticised for his handling of the case when he was foreign secretary when he mistakenly told a parliamentary committee that Ms Zaghari-Ratcliffe had been working as a journalist in Iran.

Human rights group Amnesty International said the new charges, if confirmed, would be "a awful blow" for Zaghari-Ratcliffe, her family and her supporters.

The Hampstead and Kilburn MP also said: "This is an extremely worrying development, and I know many people are concerned about Nazanin's welfare".

Zaghari-Ratcliffe's case has stirred tensions between Iran and Britain, where on Tuesday her local London lawmaker, Tulip Siddiq, tweeted confirmation that Zaghari-Ratcliffe had been taken to court and would face another trial on Sunday.

De Bruyne was also joined by former teammate David Silva, though Jurgen Klopp's side dominated the XI. Another City player, England global Raheem Sterling was also among the front-runners.

Iran does not recognise dual nationalities, so detainees such as Ms Zaghari-Ratcliffe can not receive consular assistance.

The MP added: "The last four years have been excruciating for her husband Richard and her daughter Gabriella, who is growing up without a mother".

Zaghari-Ratcliffe is a former employee of the Thomson Reuters Foundation, the charitable arm of the global news agency.

Lawyers for Ms Zaghari-Ratcliffe had previously asked Defence Secretary Ben Wallace for a meeting and called on the UK Government to stand up to Iran for its "abusive treatment" of the jailed mother of one.

She has been used as a political pawn, according to Nobel Laureate and Iranian human rights lawyer Shirin Ebadi, and civil rights groups like Amnesty International say her trial was unfair and she was jailed with no evidence.

"As a matter of absolute urgency the United Kingdom government should make fresh representations on Nazanin's behalf, seeking to have any suggestion of a second trial removed".

Tehran has denied that her detention was linked to the negotiations.

Britain is believed to owe up to 400 million pounds ($A721 million) after its non-delivery of military tanks ordered by the Shah of Iran prior to his overthrow in 1979, the newspaper said.
