California natural disaster rattles LA; centered near deadly 1987 temblor

A magnitude 4.6 natural disaster struck Southern California late Friday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

It hit at 11:39 p.m. local time two miles west of El Monte and 10 miles from Los Angeles, the US Geological Survey reported. The Whittier Narrows quake killed eight people.

The temblor was centered not far from the epicenter of the 1987 Whittier Narrows natural disaster, seismologist Lucy Jones said on Twitter.

A magnitude 4.6 natural disaster was reported Friday evening at 11:38 p.m.

She said there is about a 5% chance this was a foreshock to a bigger natural disaster.

One of the last significant earthquakes near Los Angeles was a 5.1 magnitude temblor in 2014, also on the Puente Hills fault, which caused some damage surrounding the La Habra area.

About 12:45 a.m., the department said it had completed its assessments.

According to a report from CNN, buildings were shaken and windows were broken, but there were no immediate injuries reported.

There were no reports of damage at Los Angeles International Airport, but crews are thoroughly checking the airfield and terminal, officials at Los Angeles World Airports said.
