California wildfires: Smoke hampers rescuers as blazes rage

In total, fires have burned through a record two million acres - more than the size of DE - in recent weeks.

People in a half-dozen foothill communities east of Los Angeles were being told to stay alert because of a fire in the Angeles National Forest.

One fire began as a result of a "pyrotechnic device" used during a gender reveal party, Cal Fire said.

The Lionshead Fire in OR grew to 65sq km (25sq miles) by Monday and the Beachie Creek Fire reached 2sq km (500 acres) as fire officials prepare for high winds and unsafe conditions across both wildfires late Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

On Tuesday, 14 firefighters were forced to deploy emergency shelters as flames overtook them and destroyed the Nacimiento Station, a fire station in the Los Padres National Forest on the state's central coast, the U.S. Forest Service said.

An initial attempt to rescue the group, stranded in mountain refuge for two nights, was abandoned on Monday night because of smoke from the Creek Fire.

The fire has burned more than 135,000 acres and none of it has been contained, Fresno fire chief Tony Escobedo said late on Monday.

Wildfires spread rapidly over the holiday weekend, which saw a record 121-degree Fahrenheit (49 degrees Celsius) temperature recorded in Los Angeles county.

They came as overstretched firefighters were finally gaining ground on numerous lightning-caused fires in Northern California that ignited last month. Photos posted by the Vermilion Valley Resort showed hikers lining up to board an awaiting helicopter.

Col David Hall of the California National Guard said early on Tuesday that there were "a lot of people that are still trying to be rescued".

Video showed tired hikers stepping off a Chinook chopper at the Fresno Yosemite International Airport with camping gear in tow after 46 people and four dogs were rescued from Lake Edison.

West and his colleagues decided to make their way down to a lake close to Pinewood Studios, where they all walked on water. American televangelist and pastor Joel Osteen also gave a speech during the service as he also walked on water.

Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in Fresno, Madera and Mariposa Counties due to the Creek Fire.

What about the other fires?

In Southern California, crews scrambled to douse several fires that roared to life in searing temperatures, including one that closed mountain roads in Angeles National Forest and forced the evacuation of the historic Mount Wilson Observatory.

Valley Fire in San Diego County has burned through more than 17,000 acres, and prompted the evacuation of the remote town of Alpine.

Gender reveal parties are celebrations announcing whether expecting parents are going to have a girl or a boy.

New wildfires ravaged bone-dry California during a scorching Labor Day weekend trapping campers and prompting the state's largest utility to turn off power to 172,000 customers to try to prevent its power lines and other equipment from sparking more fires.

More than 170,000 Californians were left without electricity as utility company PG&E enacted a "last resort" shutoff across large swathes of the state due to the extreme wildfire threat. The previous high was 1.96 million acres burned in 2018.

Eight people have died this fire season and almost 4,000 structures have been either damaged or destroyed.

Cal Fire spokeswoman Lynne Tolmachoff told the Associated Press on Monday: "It's a little unnerving because September and October are historically our worst months for fires". The hot, dry winds could reach 50 miles per hour at times, forecasters said.

"The combination of gusty winds, very dry air, and dry vegetation will create critical fire danger", the National Weather Service warned.
