Willian jokingly told Thiago Silva that he would have turned down a move to Arsenal and stayed at Chelsea if he knew the defender was heading to Stamford Bridge, the Telegraph have claimed.

According to the Guardian, the west London outfit are now "close" to a deal for Senegal global Mendy, with the 28-year-old nearing an £18.2m move to Stamford Bridge to provide competition for under-fire first-choice 'keeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Chelsea have spent almost £200 million ($263 million) as they have brought in on Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva, Kai Havertz and Malang Sarr and could add even more new faces.

And while the 32-year-old Willian was one of the people Silva sought advice from over his next move, it was another Brazil worldwide who played a key role in convincing him to join the Blues.

"Clubs don't want to sell or need to sell - yet".

307 new cases of Covid-19 and one further death
The Illinois Department of Public Health reported 1,392 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and seven additional deaths Tuesday. The state has recorded at least 11,849 deaths related to the virus since the outbreak began, according to Johns Hopkins.

As such, Arrizabalaga and Mendy will battle it out for the gloves, alongside Willy Caballero who started the FA Cup final in August, next term.

Mendy's 6ft 5ins frame will provide Chelsea with a more imposing figure in goal, with the player's distribution with his feet also rated as one of his stronger attributes.

Mendy's arrival will take Chelsea's summer spending close to £250m and they will look to offset such an outlay with outgoings.

And the London outfit are not done yet with a goalkeeper and Declan Rice in Lampard's sights.

The performances of Kepa have caused concern for Chelsea since his world-record arrival from Athletic Bilbao two years ago, the Spain worldwide possessing the worst save percentage amongst all regular Premier League goalkeepers last season.
