Conservative Leader O'Toole tests positive for COVID-19

The new leader of Canada's main opposition party has tested positive for the coronavirus.

Federal Conservative Leader Erin O'Toole has tested positive for COVID-19.

His wife, Rebecca, and their children Mollie and Jack, all tested negative.

The diagnoses come just one week before Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's minority Liberal government is to test support in parliament for a new agenda.

"Mr. O'Toole remains in self-isolation and is feeling well", a spokesperson says on behalf of O'Toole. The family was tested on Thursday in Gatineau, after attempting to get tested on Wednesday.

Elsewhere in the province, the Interior Health region has reported 492 cases while the Northern Health region has confirmed 244. Outbreaks remain active at 10 long-term care or assisted-living facilities and five acute-care units.

The leader of the Quebec-based Bloc Quebecois, Yves-Francois Blanchet, also tested positive for the coronavirus this week.

"He will stay in isolation at his home in Shawinigan until September 26, in conformance with the instructions of Quebec public health", the Bloc said in a statement. Blanchet had no symptoms as of Friday and will follow that guidance, the party said.

A statement from the party said the staff member was travelling with O'Toole and recently had dinner with the Conservative Leader. They will remain in isolation at his residence in Shawinigan, Que., until September 26.

Shortly after the announcement, Quebec Premier François Legault, who met one-on-one with O'Toole on Monday, said on Twitter he was self-isolating out of precaution.
