Coronavirus: Thailand added to England, Scotland and Wales quarantine-free list

Thailand and Singapore put on safe travel list but Slovenia and Guadeloupe visitors face quarantine

Travellers returning from Thailand (above) and Singapore (top) will no longer have to quarantine after they were added to the United Kingdom safe travel list tonight.

At the same time, Portugal was placed back on England's quarantine list after a rise in infections.

But Britons and holidaymakers arriving in Britain from Slovenia and the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe will face 14 days in isolation from 4am on Saturday.

England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are moving in harmony and have added the two countries to each of their quarantine lists.

The changes come into effect at 4am on Saturday, meaning from then people entering Scotland from Slovenia and Guadeloupe must self-isolate for 14 days on arrival.

Thailand has also been added to the UK's safe travel corridor.

Ministers say countries where the coronavirus infection rate is higher than 20 per 100,000 people are at risk of being added to the list - but last week the United Kingdom tipped over that threshold itself.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced on Thursday quarantine restrictions are being imposed on travellers from Slovenia and Guadeloupe.

'Data from the Joint Biosecurity Centre and Public Health England has indicated a significant change in both the level and pace of confirmed cases of coronavirus in both destinations, leading to Ministers removing these from the current list of Travel Corridors.

However, those coming from Gibraltar and Thailand will no longer need to quarantine.

'Data from Slovenia shows that the weekly incidence (cases) per 100,000 has increased from 14.4 on September 9 to 29.1 on September 16.

Justice Secretary Humza Yousaf said: "Managing the risk of importing cases from communities with high risks of transmission is vital in our efforts to suppress the spread of the virus in Scotland and imposing quarantine restrictions on those arriving in the United Kingdom is our first defence".

The rate for Guadeloupe has risen more than six-fold in the past four weeks, the DfT said.

The Government is also urging employers to be understanding of those returning from these destinations who now will need to self-isolate.

The Foreign Office advises British nationals against "all but essential travel" to the countries that have not been declared travel corridors. Passengers can be fined up to £3,200 in England if they do not provide accurate contact details, or £1,920 in Wales.

It is the latest change to the coronavirus travel regime overseen by the Welsh Government.

The UK Government and the devolved administrations make their decisions based on the fluctuating rate of transmission rates in each foreign country.
