Racist shampoo advertisement sparks protests in South Africa

The Economic Freedom Fighters issued a statement on Sunday, September 6, "Let us wage war on the racist financial sector and shut down all 880 Clicks outlets across the country from Monday 7 September 2020 to Friday 11 September 2020".

Ads for hair products used words like, "dry and damaged", to describe black women's hair - while white models were placed next to words like, "normal and fine".

"The implications of this are that black identity exists as inferior to the identity of white people", the EFF said. In his post, Maimane claimed that in-store protest action may be "overly harsh". "We know we need to do better, and commit to ensuring our content better reflects this value", it said.

EFF spokesperson Vuyani Pambo says the ruling has vindicated the decision by the party to protest at the health and beauty retailers' 800 stores.

Clicks pulled the campaign and apologised after the public backlash.

The EFF is embarking on the protest in a demand for all Clicks stores to be closed after the the racist hair labels were made by the store.

The stores have since closed.

EFF Lower South Coast Region has joined the National EFF's call to shut down all Clicks stores countrywide. The EFF said it was not satisfied by the company's response, calling it condescending and lacking in remorse.

Twitter, however, dismissed this complaint and has therefore not taken action against Malema.
