Facebook to allow employees to work remotely until year end

"Today, we announced anyone who can do their work remotely can choose to do so through the end of the year", said a spokesperson quoted by BBC.

Google will begin a phased reopening of offices in June, but with just 10%-15% of staffers allowed to be in any one location at the outset, Alphabet and Google chief Sundar Pichai wrote in a May 8 memo, as first reported by CNBC.

Specific guidance for employees will vary from location to location, based on what state and local municipalities allow, and Google said it will continue to operate in accordance with health guidance from the World Health Organization, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and other authorities where it has offices.

In taking such a step, Google is the latest tech giant to do so.

Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ: FB) also announced employees will have the option to work from home for the rest of the year, but it will also start to reopen its offices on July 6.

Google's announcement follows several news reports on Facebook's plans to extend its staff's remote work. Amazon (AMZN) has extended its work from home policy until October as has Microsoft (MSFT).

The company has cancelled all physical conferences and events it had planned with 50 or more people through June 2021.

The extension of work from home policies are expected to help some companies to redesign their office spaces to maintain social distancing measures.

Employees of Facebook have been working from home since March.

"We will share more details on that soon. A large number of people who have to be supported with technology infrastructure to work from home; business processes will have to be changed, with client permission", the co-founder of IT services firm Infosys Ltd told PTI.
