Italian Grand Prix red-flagged after Leclerc crash, Hamilton gets penalty

Italian Grand Prix paused after Leclerc crash

The team will arrive at Mugello eager to bounce back from a hard Italian Grand Prix at Monza that saw both Leclerc and Vettel retire in the first half of the race.

Ferrari now sits sixth in the constructors' championship and is on course for its worst finish since 1980.

Vettel was thankful that his brake issue did not lead to a similarly big crash, as his main failure occurred at the end of the pit straight where there is space to go straight on and rejoin the track safely. Ferrari already had Sebastian Vettel retire from the race early on after suffering a break failure.

"But on the other hand it's a testimony of where we stand and it's poor obviously where we are, especially here for our home race - I think it's probably a blessing that there's nobody in the stands". There's plenty of work, so we have to be focused on that.

"Obviously if I could choose then I don't want to be here [conducting interviews] I want to be in the auto on the track right now - and not in the back of the field but in the front, but sometimes you don't get to choose".

Leclerc admitted he was keen to move on quickly to the next race on a different circuit after a disastrous weekend for Ferrari, with both drivers failing to qualify in the top 10 and then retiring in the first half of the race.

He added: "Certainly it's tough for all of us because our main focus is the auto, the race, especially in Monza but we have to look forward to next week and look at the positives, even if there are very few".

"You see where we are", Vettel added.

"But I think we need to turn the page and look forward to make sure this is all a lesson learned for us and I think we need to look forward to progress".

"You need to be realistic".

The young Monegasque, 22, took responsibility on himself for the high-speed collision with the tyre wall. I want to be in the auto on the track right now, and not at the back of the field.

Teammate Leclerc also endured a nightmare day, as an error on the lap after a safety vehicle resulted in an off at Parabolica that brought out the red flag. With the hard tires I struggled massively, I tried to push but lost it in Parabolica and crashed ... "It is normal as the crash was quite big, but I am feeling okay".
