Journalists For US Media Face Possible Expulsion From China

China has refused to renew press credentials for foreign journalists working at United States news organisations, the latest salvo in a fast-escalating diplomatic spat with Washington.

The moves come after the US Homeland Security Department in May shortened the visa for Chinese journalists in the US - many of whom work for Chinese state-run media - to 90 days.

According to Zhao, the extensions of press cards held by the U.S. journalists, including those working for CNN, are being handled and they will not be affected in any way before they are granted new press cards.

Both heavyweights have restricted reporter visas, with China expelling journalists, as brinkmanship over trade and tech, Hong Kong and the coronavirus, spills over into the media.

The Trump administration then announced in May that all Chinese journalists would only receive 90-day work visas, as opposed to the open-ended, single entry visas they had previously been granted.

According to the State Department spokeswoman, the USA has been "working relentlessly" to convince China to allow U.S. journalists back into the country. In March, the U.S., in effect, expelled 60 Chinese journalists. The affected journalists could apply to renew their visas with the letter, but the new visa would only be valid for two months, CNN and the Wall Street Journal reported - shorter than the usual one year.

The spokesman said that although the U.S. has been escalating its political suppression of China's media for some time, including limiting visas for all Chinese journalists in the United States to a maximum of 90 days' stay, China has been exercising restraint without implementing countermeasures and has extended visas for USA journalists as usual to provide convenience for them.

In February 2020, the USA designated five Chinese media organizations in the United States as "foreign missions" and then placed a cap on the number of their staff, in effect expelling 60 Chinese journalists.

"If the US wants such reciprocity, China is also willing to get even with them on all this", she said.

Visas allowing foreign journalists to live in China are linked to their press credentials. A representative for Wall Street Journal parent Dow Jones did not respond to a request for comment.

Beijing and Washington, whose relations have deteriorated sharply over a range of issues, have exchanged several tit-for-tat actions involving journalists.

"These coercive practices have again turned accredited foreign journalists in China into pawns in a wider diplomatic conflict", the group said.
