MA no longer has the country’s highest unemployment rate

MA employers added 51,600 jobs in August as the statewide unemployment rate dropped almost 5 percentage points, bucking a two-month trend of the Bay State bearing the highest jobless rate in the country.

The state's non-seasonally adjusted decreased to 8.7%, a one percentage point drop from July.

Graham County posted the highest jobless rate in northwest Kansas at 6.5 percent, while Russell, Rooks, Rush and Barton counties all had unemployment rates at or above 5 percent.

MA added more than 51,000 jobs last month after adding almost 71,000 in July, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as the state continues to recover from the economic shutdown prompted by the pandemic.

The August rate is significantly lower than the revised 16.2% jobless rate in MA in July, according to the state Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 8.9% last month, in which the number of unemployed residents decreased by 8,200 people to 68,300.

Pennsylvania's total nonfarm jobs were up 59,500 over the month to 5,577,900 in August. The largest volume gain was in trade, transportation & utilities, up 19,600 jobs from July.

Government jobs increased by 10,400 last month, with some of those jobs attribute to a surge in U.S. Census temporary workers.

Since August 2019, Kansas seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have declined by 61,400.
