Queensland Ambulance Service was called to Greenmount Beach at Coolangatta shortly after 5:00pm.
A man has been killed by a shark off the coast of Queensland, Australia, the sixth fatal shark attack in the country this year.
It is unclear if the man was swimming or surfing at the time of the attack, but his injuries are understood to be significant.
A coastal watch camera recorded bystanders rushing into the water to help the man and his fellow surfers.
Paramedics determined he was already dead on the beach, he said.

Beaches both north and south of Greenmount Beach were immediately closed after the attack and beaches further afield on the Gold Coast are expected to stay closed tomorrow.
The death is only the second fatal shark attack off one of Queensland's 85 beaches that have been protected by shark nets and drum lines since as early as 1962, the state government said.
A helicopter was deployed to search for the shark.
"The nets are meant to catch resident sharks" and sharks that pass through the area while feeding on fish bait, but do not prevent them from entering any particular area, said the website.
