Microsoft keeps US$10b JEDI cloud contract after review

After a monthslong investigation by the Pentagon, the U.S. Department of Defence said Friday that it's sticking with Microsoft for its $US10 ($14) billion cloud computing contract.

In a blog post, Amazon on Friday criticized the DoD's decision saying that the "re-evaluation [is] nothing more than an attempt to validate a flawed, biased, and politically corrupted decision".

"While Amazon will continue to fight this issue in "JEDIgate" and possibly drag out the inevitable start of JEDI we ultimately believe this is a paradigm changer for Microsoft who will remain the lone victor in this hard fought technology/K Street battle that took place over the a year ago and remains a stinging defeat for Amazon and Bezos".

"This is not the end, as the Court for Federal Claims must still rule on Amazon Web Services' lawsuit", he said. The announcement comes roughly a year after the DoD made its original decision to offer Microsoft the bid but was unable to crown the company as the official victor due to Amazon's legally issued objections. Amazon also claims that the Pentagon favored Microsoft for the contract due to President Donald Trump's poor relationship with Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, who also owns the Washington Post.

The Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure Cloud (JEDI) contract could reach as much as US$10 billion and is part of a broader digital modernization of the Pentagon aimed at making it more technologically agile.

However, Friday, September. 3, however, was opening day in China, an increasingly important market for any major movie. The latest James Bond film, No Time to Die , which was due for release in April, will now go into cinemas in November.

"We appreciate that after careful review, the DoD confirmed that we offered the right technology and the best value", a Microsoft spokesperson told the outlet Nextgov in a statement.

"The department has completed its comprehensive re-evaluation of the JEDI cloud proposals and determined that Microsoft's proposal continues to represent the best value to the government", the Pentagon said. The probe was triggered after Amazon complained that the integrity of the bidding process was cast into doubt because of statements by President Trump. "We're ready to get to work and make sure that those who serve our country have access to this much needed technology". The resulting report, released in April, said that the Defense Department was not able to "definitively determine" whether the White House influenced the department's decision to award the contract to Microsoft over Amazon. As per the he initial decision, it was awarded to Microsoft on October 25, 2019.

Amazon's arguments amount to "trying to bog down JEDI in complaints, litigation and other delays created to force a do-over to rescue its failed bid", Shaw said. "The JEDI Cloud contract will make a full range of cloud computing services available to the DoD".

The Division of Protection is upholding its choice to award its $10 billion, 10-year cloud-computing contract to Microsoft, based on an announcement the DoD launched on September four. The contract main aim is to modernize and replenish Pentagon's IT infrastructure. Judge Patricia E. Campbell Smith wrote in her ruling that AWS "likely is correct" that the Defense Department made an evaluation error when assessing Microsoft's bid, adding the error was "quite likely" material.
