Mozilla shutters Firefox Send and Notes

Mozilla today announced that it will shutter two products: Firefox Send, the free file transfer service it already put on hiatus in July, and Firefox Notes, its note-taking extension and mobile app.

The decision to end-of-life both services is part of Mozilla's restructuring announced back in August, where the organization reduced its workforce by approximately 250 and decisions were made about which products to focus on going forward. Firefox Send was a free encrypted file-sharing service, but it was taken offline in July after Mozilla discovered it was being used to deliver malware and conduct spear phishing attacks. But it's not like the company is only focused on the Firefox web browser these days.

For those unaware, Mozilla's Firefox Send was a neat way to securely share files up to 2.5GB. The added advantages are its security features. Mozilla says if you're now using the Notes browser extension with the desktop version of Firefox you'll be able to continue to use it... but it will no longer be developed or supported and won't be available for new users to install.

We have to shake ourselves now, accept this bitter defeat and show the reaction against Werder Bremen that we expect of ourselves. Gnabry got his second two minutes after the break before completing his hat-trick just before the hour mark.

Mozilla says that the service had a loyal user base, but some "abusive users" were shipping malware through Send. The company took Firefox Send offline this summer in response, and rather than find a way to fend off the bad actors, Mozilla has chose to permanently disable the Send instead. Like every other service from Mozilla, this is also privacy driven and encrypted. The browser extension for Firefox Notes will remain active for current installs but Mozilla won't update it. Having served its goal, Firefox Notes will also be decommissioned now. Firefox said that Firefox Notes was initially developed to experiment with new methods of encrypted data syncing.

Mozilla will remove the Android app from the Play Store in November.
