Murder investigation under way after man killed and seven injured in Birmingham

West Midlands Police said the stabbings have been declared as a 'major incident'

Early eyewitness reports of a confusing night of violence in England's second city linked the police-declared "major incident" to multi-ethnic street brawls featuring "many gunshots", but police later said that they were seeking just one individual for the stabbings, which have so far left one man dead and seven people injured, two critically.

Reports of other stabbings in the area soon followed. There is a single suspect, and a manhunt is underway.

He told reporters that officers were called to reports of a stabbing in Constitution Hill, north of the city centre, and the suspect worked north-to-south.

- The victims appear to have been chosen at random and there was no suggestion the attacks had been "motivated by hate" amid concerns at the incident in Hurst Street, part of the city's gay village.

A 23-year-old man was killed in Irving Street at 01:50 BST on Sunday, while a man and a woman, aged 19 and 32, suffered critical stabbing injuries.

- A total of seven patients were treated by ambulance staff - five of which were taken to the major trauma centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

He urged the public to remain vigilant, and call 999 if they spotted anything suspicious.

"This has not been reported to us at this stage", the force wrote on Twitter early on Sunday.

But the Czech FA had subsequently announced that the squad would now be heading their separate ways amid a coronavirus threat. A spokesman for UEFA, European football's governing body, insisted on Saturday that the game will be played.

- Prime Minister Boris Johnson tweeted: "All my thoughts are with those affected by the awful incident in Birmingham last night".

A woman named Cara who was working nearby said the violence outside the night club was like nothing she'd seen before.

"But, notwithstanding that, Birmingham is a good place, it's a good place to be, it's a safe city and it is regrettable that this bad incident happened last night".

In June, a man was charged with murder after three people were stabbed to death in a park in Reading, west of London, in an attack under investigation by counter-terrorism police.

Police said they are still trying to establish details about the attacks.

Police has been spotted at several scenes across the United Kingdom city, including Livery Street, Irving Street and Hurst Street.

Also asked how the knifeman was able to move through the city centre for more than two hours without being caught, Mr Graham described the suspect's route through Birmingham as "relatively unusual".

An eighth person with minor injuries did not receive treatment.
