AstraZeneca Resumes Its COVID-19 Vaccine Trials In The U.K.

The trial for the Corona Virus vaccine has been resumed in the United Kingdom by Pharma giant AstraZeneca following a pause caused by a United Kingdom volunteer falling ill.

Oxford University, AstraZeneca's partner on the vaccine, has already resumed its trial in Britain. Trials of the vaccine will, however, remain on hold in the United States pending a U.S. investigation, Reuters reported on Monday.

The company has said that it will continue to work with health authorities across the world and be guided as to when other clinical trials can resume.

An AstraZeneca spokesperson confirmed the pause in vaccinations covered studies in the USA and other countries.

The AstraZeneca statement said information about the illness the woman suffered can not be disclosed.

AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine trial remains on hold in the United States pending a US investigation into a serious side effect in Britain even as other trials of the vaccine resume, sources familiar with the details told Reuters. Oxford University, where the vaccine was developed, said in a separate statement that the nature of the illness can not be revealed "for reasons of participant confidentiality".

The institution explained that the earlier incident was not unusual, adding that in large trials, such as the one now ongoing, "some participants will become unwell".

The dollar weakened and world stock markets rallied on Monday on encouraging signs of progress in developing a COVID-19 vaccine, while several multi-billion dollar deals also helped lift the spirit of investors after the downdraft in the past two weeks.

It was her second victory at Flushing Meadows, after capturing the trophy for the first time in 2018. The top seed is warming up on clay in Rome for the French Open, a tournament he claimed in 2016.

The volunteers in whom the vaccine will be tested must be healthy people, without disease or undertaking any form of existing medical treatment, except in the group over 65s in which some type of mild disease that does not interfere with the possible results is permitted.

"Globally some 18,000 individuals have received study vaccines as part of the trial". After this, the Phase 3 trial will begin.

She added that the evaluation was carried out for emergency use, taking into account the target groups, product characteristics, preclinical and clinical study data, population study and all relevant available scientific evidence, stressing that the health authorities, in coordination with the vaccine's developers, followed all measures to control the quality, safety and effectiveness of the program, from manufacturing to the vaccination system.

Global pharma major AstraZeneca announced on Tuesday that the clinical trials will be temporarily halted.

Chung said the government would negotiate with relevant worldwide organisations and vaccine makers to secure the supply and would buy more as developments unfolded. This is to manufacture the vaccine for low and middle-income countries.

Both vaccines require a second shot; Pfizer/BioNTech's is given after three weeks, while Moderna's is given after four.

China has four COVID-19 vaccines in the final stage of clinical trials.

"So it is critical we explore whether targetting the airways directly can provide an effective response compared to a vaccine injected into muscle".
