UK divided over Portugal and Greece quarantine

Travellers to the United Kingdom faced what the transport minister said was confusion as Wales and Scotland imposed a quarantine on arrivals from Portugal but England and Northern Ireland held back from restrictions. The number of people infected with coronavirus in Portugal in the last week has exceeded the threshold of the number at which the authorities are considering mandatory 14-day self-isolation.

The latest quarantine rules in Wales apply to travelers from Portugal, six Greek islands and French Polynesia. "I have made a decision to remove mainland Portugal (the Azores and Madeira will remain exempt), Gibraltar, French Polynesia and the Greek islands of Mykonos, Zakynthos, Lesvos, Paros and Antiparos and Crete from the list of exempt countries and territories".

However, there were rumours the Department for Transport would opt to reinstate it after the country's coronavirus cases rose to more than 20 cases per 100,000 people.

Scotland also began requiring travellers from anywhere in Greece to enter quarantine from Thursday, sparking confusion as Portugal, Greece and French Polynesia remain on England's and Northern Ireland's lists of travel corridors.

England and Northern Ireland will not.

Portugal is one of the UK's top holiday destinations.

In response to Mr Shapps saying Scotland had "jumped the gun" on Greece, a Scottish Government spokesperson said: "In the case of Greece, we had a worrying number of people in Scotland who tested positive for Covid-19 and who had returned from Greece within seven days of the onset of symptoms".

Welsh health minister Vaughan Gething said Wales was acting "in line with" the risk assessments from the JBC in imposing a 14-day quarantine on arrivals from the six Greek islands and Portugal.
