President Donald Trump said he will not let the Department of Defense stop funding Stars and Stripes, a newspaper that is subsidized by the Pentagon.

The decision came after a report in The Atlantic accuses Trump of insulting soldiers from World War I. Trump strongly denied the allegations and called it a "disgrace".

There is increasing concern that Trump is politicizing America's military, which is meant to be apolitical, ahead of the election. The organization would be dissolved by the end of January. Friday afternoon, however, Trump worked to shore up his reputation as a staunch supporter of the nation's armed services.

"I have done more to the army than nearly anybody", he stated Friday at the Oval Office.

News of the shutdown also took social media by storm, with many blaming President Trump for the move and criticizing the reasons.

While Friday's developments created plenty of questions about the future of the newspaper, its fate will involve input from Trump, the Pentagon and Congress.

Members of Congress have been objecting to the defunding move for months.

However, Frost insisted Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his senior ministers are not "scared" of such a scenario. The current sticking point is state aid.

However, with the deadline for the publication looming, calls for it to be saved have been ramped up, with several Democrat and Republic Senators joining together to ask Defense Secretary Mark Esper to reverse the decision because of the impact the paper has on military families. "As a veteran who has served overseas, I know the value that the Stars and Stripes brings to its readers", Graham wrote.

Esper's office said that the decision was "a result of the Defense-wide Review as outlined in the President's Budget Request (PBR) for Fiscal Year 2021". Signed by Army Col. Paul Haverstick, acting director of the Pentagon's Defense Media Activity, the memo says plans to close the paper are due on September 15 and the last newspaper is to be published on September 30.

The $15.5 million cut proposed by the administration was reversed in the 2021 military spending bill passed by the Democratic-led House in late July. Developed by Army Col. Paul Haverstick, acting manager of the Pentagon's Defence Media Activity, " the memo says intends to shut the newspaper are expected on September 15 along with also the previous paper will be printed on September 30.

Ernie Gates, the ombudsman for Stars and Stripes, told The Associated Press that closing the paper "would be fatal interference and permanent censorship of a unique First Amendment organization that has served USA troops reliably for generations".

The very first paper named Stars and Stripes was quite temporarily generated in 1861 through the Civil War, although the newspaper started consistent book through World War I. After the war was finished, novel ended, simply to restart 1942 through World War II, giving wartime news composed by troops especially for troops in conflict.

On the Pentagon website, DMA is described as "a mass media and education organization that creates and distributes Department of Defense content across a variety of platforms to audiences around the world".
