Thousands of migrants flee massive fire at Lesbos camp

German activists demand Greece’s Moria camp evacuation

Coronavirus infections in Greece's overcrowded migrant camp Moria on the island of Lesbos almost doubled since Monday to 35 confirmed cases, the migration ministry said on Tuesday.

Migrants from the Moria camp, some of them wearing protective face masks, wait to board a ferry that will transfer them to the mainland as a precaution against the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak, on the island of Lesbos, Greece, May 3, 2020.

At least 25 firemen with 10 engines, aided by police, were battling the flames both inside and outside the facility, the fire brigade said, adding that firemen were pushed back by migrants during their efforts to put out the fire.

"The whole camp is on fire. Their homes in Moria are gone", the organisation said.

Greek authorities last week imposed a 14-day quarantine on Moria after one man who had been living in a tent outside the camp fence tested positive for the virus. Aid groups have criticised its cramped and unsanitary living conditions, which also make social distancing and basic hygiene measures impossible to implement.

India has world's second-highest number of COVID-19 cases
According to the John Hopkins University, which compiles pandemic figures, India now ranks third globally in virus-related deaths. Later this month, public gatherings of up to 100 people will also be permitted across the country, with social distancing rules.

"It is a very hard situation because some of those who are outside will include people who are positive (for the coronavirus)".

Another 17 refugees at the camp tested positive on Tuesday after results of 1,600 tests, out of a total of 2000, were received from the National Public Health Organization, Migration and Asylum Minister Notis Mitarakis said.

Lesbos, which lies just off the Turkish coast, was on the front line of a large movement of refugees and asylum seekers to Europe five years ago.

Wildfires fanned by strong winds were also burning in two other areas on the island.
