Rochester police chief, other high-ranking officials resign amid inquiry into man’s death in custody

The entire leadership of the Rochester, New York police department has reportedly chose to suddenly retire, leaving Mayor Lovely Warren to handle by herself the upcoming protests over the death of an African-American man. Much of the encounter was caught on video.

"We look forward to securing justice for Mr. Prude and to having Rochester leaders do the hard work needed to address issues of systemic racism and training protocols in the police department". "The police chief wouldn't retire if it weren't for something that he felt he was accountable to".

But on Sunday, Warren said the police chief provided the information he knew when he had it.

The New York Post reports Deputy Chief Joseph Morabito, who served the department for 34 years, and Deputy Chief Mark Simmons also stepped down Tuesday.

She said, however, that nightly protests will continue to push other demands, including the resignation of the mayor, defunding and demilitarizing of police, and development of a state law barring police departments from responding to mental health crises. "The events over the past week are an attempt to destroy my character and integrity".

Mayor Lovely Warren said on Tuesday that the mass departure could include other senior commanders as well. One report said City Council President Loretta C. Scott told News10NBC that Singletary would stay on until September 28.

Black Lives Matter activists have called for Singletary to resign or be fired over how his department handled the investigation into the death of a black man who a medical official said was under the influence of PCP earlier this year. But she said that she does "not have the answers today".

If they refuse, they will face a 100-pound ($130) fine, that will double on each further repeat offense up to 3,200 pounds. Prof Whitty tweeted: 'We have, through the extraordinary efforts of the whole population, got Covid rates right down.

"We have spoken about maintaining our restraint regarding the ongoing protests and ask all involved to remain peaceful", she added.

Police said the officers placed a spit hood on Prude because he said he had COVID-19.

"She said she has since ordered Singletary to provide her with video from any in-custody death or use of force incident within 24 hours."
Ashley Gantt is an organization with the NYCLU, and she also is involving with the Free The People Roc demonstrations.

The chief's resignation was welcomed by the protest organizers.

"Let's keep the pressure up until all those responsible for Daniel Prude's murder and cover up - including Mayor Lovely Warren - have resigned, taken responsibility, and donated their pensions to the families they allowed to be harmed", it wrote.

"As a man of integrity, I will not sit idly by while outside entities attempt to destroy my character", Singletary said in a statement (via ABC News).

'The members of the Rochester Police Department and the Greater Rochester Community know my reputation and know what I stand for.

"The mischaracterisation and the politicisation of the actions that I took after being informed of Mr Prude's death is not based on facts, and is not what I stand for", he added.
