Fines will start at 1,000 pounds ($1,700) for a first offence and rise to 10,000 pounds ($17,000) for repeat offenders or cases where employers threaten to sack staff who self-isolate rather than working.

On Friday, the Prime Minister acknowledged the long-feared second wave of the pandemic affecting countries such as France and Spain had reached Britain and that more cases of the disease were "inevitable".

He added: "We need to do all we can to control the spread of this virus, to prevent the most vulnerable people from becoming infected, and to protect the NHS and save lives".

That's why we're also introducing a new £500 Test and Trace Support payment for those on low incomes who are required by NHS Test and Trace to remain at home to help stop the spread of the virus.

The payments system may not be ready until 12 October, but the government is promising anyone eligible who has to isolate earlier will get backdated support.

The UK government hopes the new measures will be replicated in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland - all of which have the power to set their own coronavirus rules.

The move could see pubs and restaurants ordered to close or face a 10pm curfew, while socialising between households could be banned.

These were the details of the news Coronavirus: people in England who break self-isolation rules could be fined up to £10,000 for this day.

The new legislation, which comes into effect on 28 September, says that if someone tests positive for Covid-19, or is traced as a close contact, they must self-quarantine. Police said 32 people were arrested.

To provide additional transparency in the context of the pandemic, the company also made Phase 3 protocol available online. Volunteers are expected to receive a second shot of the adenovirus-based viral vector vaccine within 21 days of the first.

Prosecutions could follow in "high-profile and egregious" cases of non-compliance.

Anneliese Dodds, Labour's shadow chancellor, said the party had called "time and time again" for people who need to isolate to be given "proper financial support".

To date there has been little enforcement of self-isolation rules, except in some cases where people have returned from overseas.

Tighter local restrictions have also been introduced in large parts of England's north-western cities, affecting some 13.5 million people.

"Ferguson said the United Kingdom was facing a ideal storm" of rising infections as the country continues to reopen, with people returning to work and schools beginning to reopen.

Right now we are at about the levels of infection we were seeing in this country in late February.

"I think some additional measures are likely to be needed sooner rather than later", Reuters quotes Ferguson.

If we leave it another two to four weeks we will be back at levels we were seeing more like mid March.

The sharp increase in infections has not yet led to a similar rise in new fatalities - in part because cases have been concentrated among younger people - but hospital admissions are now beginning to rise.
