In a statement released late on Sunday, the Federal Government said that contingent on the outcome of ongoing trials, vaccines would be made available "progressively" throughout 2021, following a $1.7 billion supply and production agreement with pharmaceutical companies AstraZeneca and CSL/Seqirus.
"This is to inform you that the subject proposal was examined in consultation with SEC (COVID-19) experts held through virtual meeting on 03-09-2020, wherein the committee recommended for the conduct of Phase II part of clinical trials with 380 participants subject to the condition that time for screening the participants should be revised to 4 days", reads the letter dated September 3.
The vaccine was registered in Russian Federation in August, before it had gone through large-scale trials.
"The data on the Russian vaccine studies reported in The Lancet are encouraging", said Brendan Wren, professor of microbial pathogenesis, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has moved to secure an initial 230 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines for Africa, while also advocating that any vaccine in development should also be tested on the continent. "The immunogenicity bodes well...."
The British publication, one of the oldest and best-respected medical journals in the world, confirmed that the Sputnik V vaccine had successfully produced antibodies in all 76 participants in early-stage trials.
The Gamaleya vaccine is given in two doses, and each dose uses a different adenovirus vector.

But with the results now published for the first time in an global peer-reviewed journal, and with a 40,000-strong later-stage trial launched last week, a senior Russian official said Moscow had answered its critics overseas.
