Coronavirus cases in England continue ‘to rise steeply’

A team from the University of Cantabria and Hospital Universitario Marqués de Valdecilla reveal 80 percent of 216 patients testing positive for COVID-19 had vitamin D deficiencies when they entered the hospital.

"Vitamin D treatment should be recommended in COVID-19 patients with low levels of vitamin D circulating in the blood since this approach might have beneficial effects in both the musculoskeletal and the immune system", Hernández added.

Lead author Francesco Landi, MD, Ph.D., Fondazione Policlinico Universitario "Agostino Gemelli" IRCCS said: "Clinicians and researchers have focused on the acute phase of Covid-19, but continued monitoring after discharge for long-lasting effects is needed".

The findings also reveal that vitamin D-deficient COVID-19 patients had a "greater prevalence" of hypertension and cardiovascular disease and also ended up having longer hospital stays than patients not deficient in the vitamin.

The study also found that infected men were more deficient in vitamin D levels than the female counterparts.

Vitamin D can be produced naturally by exposure to sunlight and found in some foods, including oily fish, eggs and fortified milk and plant-based milk substitutes.

The work published today in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism also looked at a control group of 197 people who lived in the same geographical area and were similar to the Covid-19 patient group in age and sex.

People with Vitamin D deficiency are at risk of high blood pressure and heart disease.

The Spanish research is not alone in suggesting that vitamin D might be beneficial in protecting hospitalized individuals from adverse outcomes.

However, the study did not find any link between vitamin D deficiency and COVID-19 severity.

Now, a recent study presented at the 29th Congress of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, which was conducted online from 29th to 31st October 2020, has found that COVID-19 long haulers can present with persistent skin-related problems long after their infection has cleared. Among 224 total suspected cases and 90 laboratory-confirmed cases of Covid-19 from 39 countries with information on symptom duration, the median duration of symptoms was 12 days.

It is important to note that too much vitamin D can be toxic and it can also interact with certain medications.

I think it's important to be reassured that this is generally associated with pretty mild disease. There is now no known treatment to address Covid toes, Freeman explained.
